All states have lemon laws so you are protected if you purchase a new motor vehicle that is defective. Most states include a provision in their lemon law that allows for recovery of your reasonable attorney fees in you have a lemon.

In order to prove that you have a lemon, you have to show that your vehicle suffered a serious defect that the manufacturer was unable to fix. The defect must show up and be presented to the manufacturer within a certain time frame, usually before the end of the first year to  eighteen months of ownership. In addition, the defect must be substantial, i.e. a problem or defect involving the transmission, engine,  electrical, suspension, brakes etc... before it can be the basis of a lemon law claim. (This list is not exclusive by any means, it is merely an example. Where the defect is a minor problem such as a mirror or radio, the likelihood that the defect will meet the criteria under your state lemon law is greatly decreased.

The manufacturer must be given a reasonable opportunity to correct the defect(s) before you can begin a lemon law claim. Typically, that number is 3 or 4. After the manufacturer fails to repair the problem, you may be entitled to a full refund of the purchase price or a free replacement vehicle or cash compensation. Your relief/remedy depends upon the state law that you are operating under and the severity of your vehicle's problems.
